This is a three-day race for off-road bikes and quads that covers almost 1 000 km in the mountains of Lesotho . It starts on the Thursday with the traditional Round the Houses Race, where riders complete a route in the streets of Maseru and then complete the time-trial The time-trial is over about 100 km and determines the starting position and starting times for the first day of the main race on Friday. On Friday morning, the riders start and finish at Matsieng. Friday's route is approximately 400 to 500 km and is repeated on Saturday when the 'survivors' of the race start in the order of their combined times. The Sani Stagger is the most beautiful endurance race in the country, and is held on the famous Sani Pass, the only motor road that crosses the Natal Drakensberg and the only road between KwaZulu-Natal and the kingdom of Lesotho.The race comprises a 42.2 km marathon from the Sani Pass Hotel up to the Lesotho Border Post and back; a 21.1 km down-race from the Lesotho Border Post to the Sani Pass Hotel; and a 21.1 km up-race, from the Sani Pass Hotel to the Lesotho Border Post. Three different rides are on offer, all starting at the Sani Pass Hotel on Sunday, 3 December 2007 . The 72 km Epic will take riders up Sani Pass and along the Sani Flats in Lesotho , before climbing up Black Mountain Pass. The 42 km ride climbs to the top of Sani Pass before the adrenalin rush back to the hotel. This is a classic of extremes with very little flat road. You will either be climbing in granny gear, or descending at white knuckle speeds. The 72 km family ride, the more 'sedate' option, takes riders to the South African border post, before turning back to the finish at the hotel.
